Inclusion and the equal value of all individuals were some of the key concepts considered when building and furnishing the new Slottsbergsskolan.

Slottsbergsskolan is a school with two parallel classes, from Preschool (F) through to Year 6, and space for 450 students. The interior design concept is based around educational and active learning environments, and Input interior served as a sounding board for the client’s ideas and visions in developing the project.

The design of the school supports a democratic working method, with students viewed as inquisitive and intelligent individuals who should be allowed to develop based on their own circumstances. Organisation is based on age-homogeneous groups, with each age group having its own dedicated area. The central square at the heart of the school serves as a meeting place with links to all floors.

The ground floor houses the practical and aesthetic subjects, and together with the contracted school of arts will form a creative learning environment. The dining room and sports hall can also be found here.

The dedicated areas for the students are situated on floors 1 and 2. Students from preschool to year 3 will have their home bases on floor 1. All areas here are equal in size and identical in design, with three sizes of classroom together with group rooms and discussion rooms. Each home base also has space for recreational activities, cloakrooms and toilets. Floor 2 is where students in years 4 to 6 have their home classrooms, where they will spend the majority of their day. The classrooms are equal in size and all have access to a group room.

Floor 3 is intended for school staff, with conference rooms, work spaces and staff rooms.

The flexibility in room sizes allows for varied study areas, so students can choose between differing settings with a mix of soft and hard, high and low furnishings. Everyone should be able to find a spot to suit their particular requirements.

Colour and product choices are deliberately age and gender-neutral, with earthy tones such as copper and green mixed with petroleum and ash wood. Several products feature in all the age group areas and also in the staff areas, which gives a feeling of cohesion and community.

“We have also been able to focus a lot on sustainability in this project. Input interior has long incorporated re-use, and instead of purchasing all new items in this case we were able to make use of furniture already available to us,” explains Anna Mark Ljungqvist, Project Manager at Input interior in Gothenburg.

“The end result was great and saved the client money whilst also benefiting the environment,” concludes Anna.
