Kirkelund School

When Kirkelund School was supplemented with a new building, great emphasis was placed on conscious colour choices and a modern learning environment to meet future needs.

Skiptvet Municipality saw a need to renovate the more than 100-year-old school that houses 300 students and it was decided to replace a part of the school with a new building on two floors. The older building was connected to the new one by a footbridge.

The result was an extension with study rooms and classrooms where the traditional meets the new and modern. The focus has been on sustainable choices where architecture, materials and interior design will last over time. In corridors and common areas, cast-in-place concrete walls are a continuous element that is interspersed with wall panels in wood. The ceiling has a ribbed panel which, in addition to its aesthetic function, also has a sound-absorbing function.

Conscious colour choices

The interior design concept is created by Østre Linje arkitektur og landskap and based on the fact that each year cohort should have its own colour – green, orange or yellow. The colours follow throughout the interior and are also noticeable in the school’s three main entrances, which all have been given one of the three colours. Cloakrooms and classrooms also follow the theme, which creates clarity and orientability for the students.

– The school feels inviting and the result reflects a good collaboration between school, contractor, interior designer and Input interior, says Caroline Borgeraas, site manager at Input interior in Fredrikstad.

Input interior has delivered all fixed and loose furnishings to the school, including specially made picture walls and waste stations in the classrooms, as well as site-built benches for the footbridge that connects the older building with the new one.

– We have also acted as an active support regarding colour choices, surface materials and solutions based on the architect’s vision and the customer’s needs, Caroline concludes.
