Reupholstering that makes a difference

When one of Europe's largest meeting places undergoes renovation, Input interior and Wingårdhs are part of the journey. Here, long-term and well-thought-out solutions are created for the experiences of the future.

Every year, Svenska Mässan and Gothia Towers welcome around two million visitors. Fairs and conferences are held here, and the facility houses several restaurants and 1,200 hotel rooms. 80 of these have been completely renovated with great care taken to ensure sustainable and conscious choices. The aim is for interior design to stand the test of time and be easy to repair or replace when necessary.

Work on further developing the environments continue, and the latest phase focused on the large congress hall. Since its inauguration in 1992, the hall has been a central venue for both meetings and events, with its 1,328 chairs being used extensively. The structure remained in good condition, but signs of wear and tear had become apparent in the upholstery.

“Now the chairs will live on with brand new fabrics. To create soft and gradual transitions between the rows, we chose three different shades that form a gradient. The effect enhances the depth of the room and simplifies any future changes,” says David Regestam, interior designer at Wingårdhs.

Input Interior handled the reupholstering and the process of finding the right fabric, a task that involved weighing up many different aspects. Durability and wear resistance are important parameters, and after careful evaluation, the choice fell on a fabric from Gabriel Fabrics.

“We settled on a fabric made from 100% wool, a natural material with fantastic properties! In addition to being renewable and biodegradable, it is durable, flame-resistant and dirt-repellent,” says Linda Jorfors, Account Manager at Input Interior.

Now that all the chairs have been dismantled, reupholstered, and reinstalled, the conference hall feels new.

“The end result is really nice and shows what can be achieved through reuse,” says Linda Jorfors.

David Regestam adds:

“It was a fun project, and we’ve had a really good response, which is always positive!”
